Backpacker guesthouses in Phuket
Backpacking in Phuket isn’t dead — it’s just not quite as popular as it once was. There are still more than enough guesthouses, hostels and cheap hotels to keep backpackers happy. If you want some cheap, budget accommodation for your trip to Phuket, check these establishments out.
The Phuket Backpacker Hostel on Ranong Road (076-256680, www.phuketbackpacker.com) is basic and cheerful with rooms going for up to 1,000 baht a night, which may be a little out of range of true Phuket backpackers.
The Crystal Inn Hotel (076-22 2775-6. www.phuketcrystalinn.com) on Montri Road near Surin Circle is a cheap Phuket hotel for backpackers with a little more cash to splash.
Forty-three on Thailand Road (076-258127) is very cheap and really encapsulates the backpacker buzz in Phuket. Definitely a guesthouse worth checking out if you’re on the island. Call in advance as there may be no rooms available.

Phuket 346 (076-256128, www.phuket346.com) on Phuket Road is kind of like an upmarket guesthouse. It only has three rooms and they go for about 1,200 baht a night, but everything is very clean and well done. An artsy place if ever there was one.
Crystal Guest House ( 076-222774-5) on Montri Road is nothing to write home about but will do if you need it.
On On on Phang-nga Road (076-211154) is something of a legend among Phuket backpackers. This guesthouse has been around forever. It was actually Phuket’s first hotel, opened in 1929. It’s not the most modern of guesthouses and it has cold showers, but it’s a decent hangout and it also has a noisy bar.

Phuket Baan Chang Bed and Breakfast, 23/6 Moo 6, Soi Koktanod 8, Baan-Don, Cherngtalay, Thalang (087-8934-636, www.phuketbedandbreakfast.com). We’ve found this one listed on a few backpacker websites, but with prices from 1,800 baht, we aren’t really sure why.
