Nightlife in Phuket

Phuket nightlife is always evolving and changing, but the good news is that over the last few decades it keeps getting better with plenty of night spots to try out throughout the different districts. Those from the west may enjoy the nightlife in Phuket more than areas such as Patong, Kata, and Karon due to the fact it is a bit less Westernized and thus more exotic and a treat to experience while on holiday. The main emphasis of nightlife in Phuket town is actually a vibrant live music scene with dozens of local bands competing to win your patronage. In fact, clubbing usually consists of grabbing a group of friends and heading to the club. Once there usually the night consist of purchasing a bottle of whiskey to share while the group dances the night away near a table until one or two in the morning. Most clubs in Phuket town are not DJ’d for the majority of the night, but instead feature local bands that play covers of local Thai favorites along with Western numbers tossed in between to lend some familiarity to tourists. At the end of the night the bands exit the stage and a DJ comes out to end the night with some techno or hip hop and given the fact that everyone is drunk at this stage of the night the dance floor usually lights up. Timberhut is one of the best clubs in Phuket Town and one of the most popular given the fact that it could almost be considered historical in terms of average club longevity and due to the fact that it gets quite busy almost every day of the week and of course even more so on the weekends. For this reason it is best to head out early if you want a great spot since Timberhut gets the best local band that plays a much better set than most local musicians. A larger club is the KorTorMor, which offers pretty much the same atmosphere but is especially popular among the younger student population. Foreigners also tend to enjoy the vibrancy and the crowds that party into the night at the club. Oasis is another great albeit smaller venue that is a local hidden gem and a treasure to discover. It is quite a bit more homely and friendly and the music is standard. Most people simply enjoy the small town feel of the club. Those who want a completely unique experience may want to head to the ex-pat jazz favorite called Music Matters. With an open air bar that is hidden down a small soi the club is...

Come to Phuket… To Find a Wife?

Come to Phuket… To Find a Wife?

Is Phuket the ideal place to find a good wife? Our answer is yes. Phuket is a beautiful island off the coast of Thailand where you’ll notice a large number of Thai – Western couples. You may notice during your stay, that within schools and playgrounds, there are many children of mixed ethnicity happily playing with local Thai children. A complete generation of culturally diverse children are growing up to be a large asset of Phuket’s tourist industry. The trend of mixed marriage in Phuket has exploded over the last decade. The main reason behind this is Phuket’s tourist trade and readily available sex. Every year more than a million of western tourists visit Phuket and it is natural that some percentage of those people will fall in love with locals, especially since many Thai women are so appealing. But this can not be the only reason behind it; there’s more to it than just physical attraction. The Caribbean, US and Mediterranean attracts millions of tourists but there you will not find so many mixed marriages as you will find in a small place like Phuket. There are many female tourists also in Phuket but few of them prefer to settle there; meanwhile the number of male tourists that prefer to settle in Phuket is countless. So, we can draw a conclusion;  there are many male tourists who really come to Phuket to find a wife than any thing else. Many men are dissatisfied with their experiences of women in their own country. Presently, women have become very confident, assertive and very demanding in the relationship. and they expect a lot from their partners. The more old-fashioned, traditional men really do not like it. They want feminine, devoted wives. But you still cannot apply the same formula for all the men who marry Thai girls and settle in Phuket. They all have their own story. But to make a broad generalisation, you can place these men in three groups. This may happen anywhere in the world but our first group, is men that fall in love in Phuket because the girls are a novelty;  Thai girls are charming and attractive, and mostly, new to the men who love them. The second group of men fall tn love with bargirls; these women work in the sex industry, they know very well how to sell themselves and attract men to them. This group men pick up a bargirl just to have sex and enjoy the holidays but at the end of holidays attachment becomes so strong that he falls in love. The third group of men come prepared to find a...

Phuket: One of the Hottest Gay Destinations in the World!

Phuket: One of the Hottest Gay Destinations in the World!

The Land of Smiles, Thailand is a Mecca for gays. With almost ninety percent of its population following Buddhism, there is not much judgement and certainly no protest against homosexuals. It is advised that westerners conduct some small research into the country’s traditions before going on tours because it may be a bit hard for them to take in all of a sudden. So it is best to prepare. That is, two people of same sex walking down the road holding hands might be taken as a simple friendship but two people of opposite sexes sexually mingling in the public is totally unacceptable. Nudity in public is especially reacted upon by the officials as well as the civilians though what happens behind a closed door is a private matter. Never touch another’s head, as the head is considered to be sacred. Even pointing your feet at someone is considered as an act of dark magic or ill omen. The mood of the trip will be as the traveler chooses. It can be relaxing or active depending upon your own desires. Though the most popular attraction has been the ever active night life. The pubs, boy bars and go-go clubs that have been popping up all over the place are amazing. All these make Phuket one of the hottest gay destinations. But there are places like Koh Samui where you can get the laid back traditional Thailand feel along with a little bit of night life though much more to a lesser degree than that of the cities. Catching a drag performance, visiting a Buddhist temple, and are other gay activities available. You can go on gay tours as well. The best time for a trip to Thailand is between November and February as the rest of the year is unpleasantly hot. While planning your gay vacations, keep in mind that the country offers three separate gay pride festivals. So what is not to like about this place? The food is great, great hangouts and night life and most of all, they don’t judge you or interfere with your “private...

Sound Phuket packs up and leaves the island

It was a shame to hear that Sound Phuket, the lavish nightclub brought to the island by the people behind Bed Supperclub, has closed its doors after only one year. Phuket’s nightlife scene hasn’t progressed much in the past couple of years and the owners of Sound clearly have little faith in the island considering how quickly they’ve pulled out. It was perhaps not a great surprise given the club’s odd location, massive size and predictable DJ lineup playing predictable music. Stereo Lab is by all accounts still the place to be, while Hollywood and Seduction in Patong remain as strong as ever. So long, Sound. And next time, give your barstaff at least a couple of weeks warning before you make them...

Enjoy the Nightlife in Karon Beach

In Phuket, if you are looking for a nightlife scene which is a balance between the rowdy and the relaxed, then Karon would be the place to go to. There are also many tourists here but does not get as busy as Patong does. However, Karon does offer a good number of bars and restaurants which serve as great places to go at night to meet and interact with other locals and tourists. The nightlife scene in Karon is primarily centered on Luang Poh Chuan Road and in the Aroona Karon complex. These areas both have several pubs and bars, along with some upscale and stylish watering holes. Most of these nightlife venues are close together but not really that crowded so you would be able to do a bit of bar-hopping at your own pace. Luang Poh Chuan Road can be compared to the Bangla Road of Patong, with a bar soi on each of the ends. Some of the bars here would include Hot Shot, Nan’s and Winner. You can also find a side street that has a few shops and restaurants. Most of the bars on Luang Poh Chuan Road are equipped with pool tables. There are also some bars which offer a bit of a lascivious atmosphere such as Amazon, Easy Bar and Bikini Bar. If you are looking for a trendy bar, you can try out the Karma Lounge, the Nakonai Art Plaza and the Sanook Sports Bar. Aroona Karon would be the other main nightlife area in Karon. It is a good place to go to for both dinner and drinks with its good variety of restaurants and bars. Some of the bars here would include the Skylight Bar, the Viking Bar, the Allies Bar and the Magic Bar. Prices of drinks in Karon are less expensive than in Patong, but are more expensive than in Phuket City. Local beer such as Chang, Singh, Tiger, Leo and Cheers cost around 70 to 100 baht, imported beer such as Heineken and San Miguel cost about 80 to 110 baht, while spirits cost about 90 to 120 baht. For those who would be traveling with their families and are not really interested in the nightlife that Karon offers, some entertaining activities to do would include a visit to the Dino Park where you can play some miniature golf, eat some burgers and take a lot of pictures. You can also watch the breathtaking sunset at the Koh Chang Elephant Camp, where the resident monkeys would surely be a delight to young...

Bed Supperclub coming to Phuket

Bed Supperclub is one of Bangkok’s most established nightclub venues. Bed is synonymous with the finer things in life. Some people love the place, others hate it, but customers continue to pass through the doors week in, week out. Bed Supperclub is where you go to be seen, or just to stare at models. So we’re mildly excited about the prospect of Bed Supperclub coming to Phuket. The new venue is located on the third flood of Juncgceylon in Patong. It’s called Sound, which is an interesting name for a nightclub. If you’ve spent any time in Phuket then you’ll know that there is definitely a market for this kind of upmarket venue. When Club Lime first opened, people flocked there. Now it looks as if Catch Beach Club is the “in” place to go. Sound will probably steal everybody’s thunder. While Phuket does need creativity in terms of nightlife, sticking Bed Supperclub on the third floor of Jungceylon is a bold move. For a start, it’s in Patong. It’s difficult to say how the average Patong tourist will feel about going to Sound. As with the Bangkok venue, however, it’s a restaurant, as well as a nightclub. It’s similar in principle to somewhere such as White Box, but with the guys from Bed behind the place, it will have a lot more authority – and money. Expect swanky parties and maybe even Phuket’s first models’ night soon. It was supposed to open in December, but has been...

Where to party in Phuket this Friday

We told you: Surin Beach is becoming the new hotspot for nightlife in Phuket. People are becoming tired of those trips out to Patong Beach and the venues out there haven’t been doing much to develop the nightlife scene in recent weeks. The venue that everyone in Phuket is talking about at the moment is Stereo Lab at Surin Beach. Every Friday night they now host a party called Spin, which kicks off just before sunset at 5:30 pm and goes on well into the early hours of the morning, slated to finish at about 2 am. The guys rocking the parties are Tommy T, Tuzz and Q, all of whom are familiar faces on the Phuket party circuit. Stereo Lab looks poised to become Phuket’s hot new Friday night venue. There are drinks offers on the night and the vibe is always laidback and calm. If you have nothing to do this Friday, this is your...

Patong nightlife losing its grip?

When Club Lime first launched, it was like a breath of fresh air for Patong nightlife. There was finally a nightclub in Patong that was pumping out fresh music with credible DJs. After hosting some of the best parties the Patong nightlife scene had ever witnessed, Club Lime might be losing its shine in the eyes of dedicated clubbers. This isn’t to say that Club Lime isn’t still a great party venue, but the focus has shifted from music to attracting large crowds with foam parties and all-you-can-drink events. This is great for getting people through the door, but what Patong nightlife has needed for so long is venues chartering new territory. For this reason, it looks as if Surin Beach might be the island’s new hot spot. Places to check out include Stereo Lab and Catch Beach Club (bar and restaurant). Also hoping to steal some of the thunder from Patong nightlife is Sri Panwa with Baba-Q and Baba 88. It will be interesting to see how nightlife in Patong and around the island develops over the coming...

Judge Jules talks to Phuket Vogue

Superstar DJ extraordinaire Judge Jules was back in Phuket on January 15 throwing down some more of his trademark beats. The gig was once again held at Seduction in Patong and it was another packed-out affair, which can only be a positive thing for Phuket’s evolving nightlife scene. Here’s what the Judge had to say about his latest trip to the island. Vogue: How was your night at Seduction; how did it compare to last year’s show? Jules: Although this has supposedly been a very quiet year for Phuket as a resort, it was busier and better than my last visit. Vogue: Have you seen any progress in the DJ club scene in Phuket since your last visit? Jules: I didn’t get to visit any other venues, but Seduction has improved as a venue since last year, with better sound and relocated dj booth. Vogue: What did you do on your downtime here? Jules: Shopped and stuffed myself with Thai seafood. Vogue: How did you first have the idea to play in Phuket? Had you ever been here before? Jules: I’d played in Bangkok and Samui, but last year was my first Phuket visit. After this second trip, I hope there will be many more. Vogue: What do you think it will take to have a club scene in Phuket like in Samui, Ibiza or elsewhere? Jules: As a location it’s certainly got the right type of crowd, all it needs is regular international DJ appearances, which Seduction is trying to do. Vogue: Do you think you’d ever launch a regular gig here or maybe have a home in Phuket or elsewhere in Asia, like you do in Ibiza? Jules: It’s a little too far away, otherwise I’d happily snap somewhere up in Thailand. I love everything about the country — the people, the atmosphere, the climate and above all, Thai food. Vogue: Do your kids ever travel with you when you’re on tour? Jules: Yes, those that take place during school holidays. Vogue: You seem to keep a pretty relentless touring schedule. Will you slow down now that you have a family? How many shows are you doing these days? Jules: In 2008 I visited over 30 countries and played roughly 175 gigs. I love it, and don’t plan to calm down any time soon. Vogue: You say the album Bring the Noise will be available February 2. Where can people in Thailand buy it? Will it be released in stores here? Jules: It’s available via iTunes right now, and as physical CD product on Feb 2. Vogue: Do you adjust your sets for the Phuket crowd? Do...

Phuket Blues Festival 2009

It’s that time of year again: The Phuket Blues Festival is almost upon us. Undoubtedly one of the highlights of the year in Phuket, the Phuket Blues Festival will take place February 20-21 once again at the Hilton Phuket Arcadia Resort and Spa located in Karon. Last year’s festival was a blast with some great live music and a fantastic crowd enjoying the laid-back vibe. The 2009 festival will be headlined by Eric Bibb, a household name for blues fans around the world. Joining Mr Bibb will be the likes of Mitch Woods and his Rocket 88s, Bert Deivert & Janne Zander, a pretty aussie lady named KNIKI and Chasing Jimi, which is a Jimi Hendrix tribute band. It should be another great festival. Lord knows Phuket needs some good times after the recent “high” season. There will be a pre-festival bash held at Rockin’ Angel Jammin’ Café on February 19. For more information about the festival, call 086-682-2639 or email phuketmusic [at] yahoo [dot]...
