9th Floor restaurant in Patong

Ad: 9th Floor Restaurant, Sky Inn Condotel, 47 Rat-U-Thit Road, Patong. Tel: 076-344-311. Web: www.the9thfloor.com Email: [email protected] VV–VVV It seems to have become a bit of a trend for Swiss restaurateurs to set up shop in Phuket. The number of high-quality Swiss-run restaurants on the island increases every year. The restaurant is located in the Sky Inn Condotel on, you guessed it, the ninth floor. The food is a blend of international dishes with a smattering of Swiss specialities thrown into the mix. Being so high in the sky, the views out over Patong are another boon for this Phuket eatery. The décor of the restaurant is all black and white with large windows from floor to ceiling offering those great views. This is a chic Patong restaurant and you’ll feel uncomfortable if you turn up in short and sandals. The wine list has something like 180 labels, so you know you’re in for a treat here. The menu is chock full of pasta, steaks, fish and other delectable...

The Royal Kitchen Chinese restaurant in Patong

Ad: Royal Paradise Hotel, Rat-U-Thit Road. Tel: 076-340-666. VV Perched atop the Royal Paradise Hotel in the center of Patong’s Paradise Complex is the Royal Kitchen, a fun Chinese restaurant that has gone all out in the décor department, as you might expect to find at Paradise Complex. The food is delightful at this Phuket restaurant. It’s definitely one of the better Chinese eateries in the area. The restaurant seats 140 and you’re treated to great views out over the rabble in Patong down below. As far as Patong restaurants go, the Royal Kitchen is reasonably formal. It would make sense to dress smartly if you were planning to dine here. The atmosphere is laidback and calm, with a Filipino band providing the musical accompaniment for the evening. There’s also a wine list with almost 30 labels on it. Check out the Phuket set menu for five courses of fine Chinese nosh. Open for lunch and...

Terrazzo Italian restaurant at the Holiday Inn in Patong

Ad: Terrazzo in Holiday Inn Resort Phuket, 52 Thaweewong Road, Patong. Tel: 076-340-608. VV Terrazzo is the Holiday Inn’s signature restaurant. It’s a great place to grab a meal after a day of loafing around on the beach in Patong. This Patong restaurant primarily focuses on Italian food, but there are a number of other dishes on the menu. There’s a great deck terrace for al fresco dining at Terrazzo. The décor is bright and breezy with bold splashes of color through the restaurant. There’s an open kitchen and a wood-fired oven to keep patrons entertained while they’re waiting for their meals. There’s indoor and outdoor dining. This certainly isn’t one of Phuket’s most stylish joints, but it’s a decent place to grab a bite to eat. There’s also a popular bar at Terrazzo that attracts a fair-sized crowd from one night to the next. The pizzas are tasty enough, although there are some unusual toppings, such as chicken tandoori with mango...

Coyote restaurant in Patong

Ad: The beach road, Patong. Tel: 076-344366. VV Located on the beach road (the south end), Coyote Mexican restaurant is the Phuket equivalent of the restaurant of the same name in Bangkok. Just like the one in Bangkok, Coyote serves up some mean Mexican food — possibly the best in Phuket — and the portions are notoriously generous. Though it is perhaps a little pricey considering the food you’re presented with (about 400 baht a dish), the food is really good and there are shots and margaritas if you’re out drinking. The outdoor area is cool, but you might find the musical entertainment from next door a little overbearing. Tourists seem to love it, however, and tend to leave the indoor area empty. As it’s firmly on the tourist trail, there are usually large groups of tourists eating and drinking boisterously, even during low season. Coyote isn’t a romantic spot; it’s a place to eat Mexican food and get drunk. If you fancy a quiet bite to eat you probably shouldn’t be eating out in...

Fuji sushi restaurant in Patong and Phuket City

Ad: Jungceylon, Patong. Ad: Central Festival, Phuket City. VV When you’ve been living in Phuket for any length of time, you come to realize that Fuji restaurants aren’t that special. Fuji restaurants offer great sushi in Phuket, but the restaurants are all part of a chain that you can find all over Thailand. Basically, it’s hard to get excited about Fuji sushi restaurants if you’ve been in Phuket for longer than about two weeks. That being said, if you’re new to Phuket and Thailand and you want to try some cheap sushi, Fuji is just about the best place to do it. The sushi at Fuji is affordable and pretty good. These Japanese restaurants in Phuket are incredibly popular with the Thais, so you might have to fight for a seat at peak times. When it comes to sushi in Phuket, you don’t have that many options, which is suprising given that Phuket is an island. We like Fuji, but it’s not exactly the connoisseur’s choice. The Phuket City restaurant and Patong restaurant are pretty much...

Harry's Scandinavian restaurant in Patong

Ad: Soi Patong Tower, Patong, in front of Patong Tower. Tel: 076-340418. VV You’ll find this Patong restaurant about 100 or so meters from McDonalds. Harry’s restaurant serves up all manner of Scandinavian dishes. If you are a fan of Scandinavian food, Harry’s will see you right. There is a range of steaks and other tasty treats. It’s not the cheapest restaurant in Patong, but the food is above average so you can take some comfort in that. Whether you’re after seafood, ribs or even pizza, Harry’s has a fair-sized menu. In terms of Scandinavian food, there are better and cheaper places around the island, but in Patong, this one is up there with the best in the area. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Harry’s is a popular choice with the many Scandinavians visiting Phuket, most of whom stay in Kata and Karon, rather than Patong. Harry’s is clean, very Western and worth a...

Navrang Mahal Indian restaurant in Patong

Ad: 58/11 Bangla Road, Patong. Tel: 076-292280. Web: www.navrangmahal.com VV Another India restaurant in Patong. Phuket’s large Indian population means that there are lots of great places for Indian food on the island. Patong is no exception. Being in Patong, this Indian restaurant isn’t exactly the cheapest place, but the food is decent and worth a look if you’re into your spices. They serve North and South Indian dishes here. The buffet is a popular choice with visitors to Phuket. Otherwise, expect a standard range of Indian dishes for you to sample. We’re big fans of Indian food and so when we stumble upon a place that knows how to make the food, we usually make the effort to visit it every one in a while. This is one such...

Floyd's Brasserie in Patong

Ad: 18/110 Burasari Resort, Ruamjai Rd, Patong. Tel: 076-292929. Web: www.burasari.com VVV Ah, Keith Floyd. The only celebrity chef with the balls to seemingly tell it how it is. Floyd’s at Burasari opened to much fanfare in Phuket in 2007 and the restaurant has quickly established itself as one of the best places to eat on the island. If you’re lucky enough, you might actually catch Floyd himself bumbling about the place interacting with guests or making sure the food is being prepared to his high standards. He recently made the decision to settle in Phuket, so he’s usually around. Floyd’s is a good restaurant in Phuket that features some fantastic dishes, such as crispy duck leg, foie gras and lobster. This restaurant in Patong is most well know for the Sunday brunch, which boasts everything from world cuisine to local oysters. Being a restaurant of a renowned wine lover, there is, understandably, a decent wine list. Dress up for the occasion if you’re heading out to Floyd’s. A recommended Phuket...

White Box bar and restaurant near Patong

Ad: Coast Road, just before Kamala Hill. Tel: 076-600177. Web: www.whiteboxphuket.com VV-VVV White Box is a hip little restaurant and bar in Phuket, not far from Patong. As the name suggests, the place is predominantly white and, well, in the shape of a large box. In terms of design and ambience, the venue is a cut above all the bars, clubs and restaurants in Patong. The top floor also has a decent view over Patong Bay. Drinks are pretty expensive and the place has something of an upmarket feel about it, but you get what you pay for and the nightspot element of White Box is by no means a slouch among Phuket bars and clubs. The music policy at night varies. At the moment, White Box seems to be going through a hip hop phase, although at other times there have been DJs spinning house and electro. There is a decent-sized dance floor and ample seating if it all gets a bit too much. Definitely one of the trendier nightspots in Phuket and around Patong. Some people seem to think that White Box is only a restaurant. It isn’t, which is why its owners promote it also as a nightclub when it suits. On the restaurant side of things, the food is quite expensive, but suitably decadent, with dishes such as lobster ravioli and tuna tartar on the menu. White Box is a cool place to hang out...

BYD lofts bar in Patong

Ad: Rat-U-Thit Road, Club Andaman Resort. Tel: 076-3430247. Web: www.bydlofts.com VV Out of the way of most of the bars in Patong, this casual restaurant-cum-nightspot is where the local hipsters and wannabes hang out before heading out to one of the main clubs in Patong. It’s usually used a place for pre-club drinks by people who then head out to Club Lime. The drinks are expensive, but the ambience is refreshing, with finger food or a full menu if you’re hungry. During high season, BYD Lofts hosts a few parties that usually attracts a decent-sized crowd. There are regular appearances by DJs and live music vocalists, such as local favourite Bonnie Anderson. BYD Lofts is one of the more appealing restaurants and bars in Patong, but it can be a little too laid back for its own good. Worth a visit if you’re looking for a spot in Patong that isn’t full of sweaty tourists and gyrating go-go dancers. The food is rather good if you fancy splashing out a bit on various Western dishes: pasta, salad, burgers, steaks and so...
