Phuket remembers the tsunami
It has been four years now since the tsunami in Phuket. Although we weren’t actually on the island when it happened (December 26, 2008), just being in Phuket and speaking to the people who were there is a sobering experience. It’s amazing to think that such destruction can happen to such a beautiful island.
Most of Phuket’s beaches have fully recovered from the tsunami, but the memories live on, fresh in the minds of those who were affected by it, those who lost their family, friends, coworkers. Even with all the media coverage, it’s difficult to imagine what it was like during the tsunami. The media couldn’t show the full extent. If you ever get a chance to see photos taken just after the tsunami, you’ll know that it was a far more devastating event than newspapers or television broadcasts could ever portray.
About 5,000 people lost their lives in the Andaman region and about 400 of those are still unidentified. There are also still 445 people unaccounted for.
