Spend your Songkran in Patong
When it comes to Songkran, you either do it 100% or you may as well not bother. Tiptoeing around the madness only makes you more of a target and you will get soaked no matter what you do. It makes sense to adopt a similar kind of philosophy whenever you go to Patong: just get stuck in and go with the flow.
With Songkran almost upon us once more, it’s time to plan where you’re going to spend the holiday season. For an easy solution, you need look no farther than Patong. As always, the fun is set to take place April 13 to 15.
First the first couple of days it’s all rather timid, but come April 15, all hell breaks lose. In Patong, they take it about 500 notches up and the streets are lined with maniacs armed with water guns and buckets and troughs and powders and everything else you can imagine.
By far the best way to spend the day is to find someone with a pickup truck and get them to drive around the island. Hundreds of people do this. You get yourself a few barrels loaded with ice-cold water and cruise around the streets. It’s totally dangerous and there are more road accidents than at any other time of the year, but it is a lot of fun while it lasts, as long as you don’t end up as roadkill. Once the day is done, make your way to Patong where the fun will go on for most of the night.
If you don’t like getting wet and messy, then Songkran is probably best enjoyed from indoors. Nobody is spared a good soaking outside. If you do go out, be sure to keep your money and phone wrapped up in some kind of plastic bag and try and avoid riding a motorcycle at all costs.
