When Should You Visit Phuket?
If you are planning to visit Phuket, then you are probably thinking about when to go. Like most places, the best time to go differs with what exactly it has to offer for you.
Songkran is Thai New Year and probably the best time to visit Phuket. The traditional gestures of pouring a little water on each other have been combined with the western need for fun. Now, it has transformed into the world’s biggest waterfight. Wherever you go during the Thai New Year, it is sure to kick off. It all takes place from April 13th to the 15th, with the 15th being the day for the biggest waterfight of them all. The streets are lined with people armed with water hoses, water guns and buckets, as everyone gets involved in this event; every man, woman, child and tourist gets wet and tries to make others receive the same treatment.
One of the strangest festivals in Phuket is the Phuket Vegetarian Festival, where men and women walk around in a manner that will make you to believe that they are in a trance. They have their cheeks pierced with knives, needles, spears and all kinds of strange and sharp objects. This festival happens every year in October and had to the seen to be believed. If you visit Phuket, this is one is the event you should not miss out on.
When you visit Phuket, during the festival, you will find that most of the restaurants have taken meat off the menu for the duration. There are also little ceremonies in the Chinese and Buddist temples and a procession through the streets of Phuket. This is accompanied with fireworks and firecrackers thrown into the road from the people, who have lined the streets.
The Chinese New Year, which takes place in February, is also a fun time to visit Phuket. There is a huge firework display visible form everywhere in the city, but is especially good when seen from the beach, where everyone heads to, just before midnight. The streets are filled with sellers selling everything you need for an amazing new year, including fireworks at discounted prices. Be careful with these, as they quite often head straight into the crowds after being lit by less then sober people.
